Season 2010
Hello everyone! Teatro’s 2009 season has come to a close, and I don’t mind telling you that it was the most successful in the company’s history. Season’s ticket sales were up 20 percent, with overall attendance surpassing even that, so clearly audiences are liking Teatro’s new spring/ summer/fall festival format. We’re very proud of our past season, one which included the revival of Stewart Lemoine’s travel romp Connie in Egypt, plus two wildly contrasting Lemoine premieres- the hilariously Shakespearean 1980’s melodrama Mother of the Year, and the intimate and affecting The Oculist’s Holiday. And to close- the best attended show, bar none, in Teatro’s 16 year history at the Varscona, the new musical comedy Everybody Goes to Mitzi’s, created by a stellar quartet from Teatro’s next generation- Jocelyn Ahlf, Andrew MacDonald-Smith, Ryan Sigurdson, and Farren Timoteo.
Planning for Teatro’s exciting 2010 season is well under way, with lots of details in place, and more to be confirmed shortly. We’re therefore more than happy to tell you what we know so far, and to begin selling subscriptions for next year in time for holiday gift-giving. We’re also pleased to announce that although there will be a slight increase in single ticket prices next season, subscription prices have not gone up, no, not one cent! Subscribing to Teatro has never been such an alluring proposition. How can you resist? HOW??
Need a little more encouragement. Well alright, here’s what we know so far:
SHOW # 1
April 29- May 15, 2010
On the Banks of the Nut
The season opens with a revival of a play that is, by Stewart Lemoine’s own admission, one of his personal favorites. This 1950’s screwball caper follows an affably inept government agent and a plucky temp on a hare-brained talent quest through rural Wisconsin. Leona Brausen, Jeff Haslam, and Davina Stewart, return to the roles they created in the play’s 2001 premiere, with Kristen Padayas and Eric Wigston in exciting company debuts. This show really has it everything you could want- cheese, pie, Mahler, bird-watching, embattled star-crossed lovers, and the most sudden civic election in history- all On the Banks of the Nut!
SHOW #2
July 8-24, 2010
A Sack-load of Laughs and People: Title to be Announced
In the tradition of our last two big-cast summer frolics, A Rocky Night for His Nibs and Mother of the Year, we’re back with a raucous and rollicking party piece by Stewart Lemoine featuring a delightfully deluxe ensemble. Teatro fan-faves Davina Stewart, Jeff Haslam, Julien Arnold, Kate Ryan, and Jana O’Connor are joined by dewy debs Kristy Hansen and Jenny McKillop and illustrious wise-acre Dana Andersen! Further casting bombshells to be detonated down the pike.
SHOW #3
August 12-28, 2010
Teatro at the Fringe
Teatro returns to the Fringe with another Lemoine premiere- his 20th at the Festival! The title and topic are as yet shrouded in mystery, but you have every right to expect another startlingly elegant and amusing offering in the style of Happy Toes and The Oculist’s Holiday, performed by a cast of impeccable Teatro pedigree- Leona Brausen, Briana Buckmaster, Belinda Cornish, Jeff Haslam, Andrew MacDonald-Smith, and Sheri Somerville.
SHOW #4
October 7-23, 2010
Another New Musical from the People Who Brought You Mitzi!
Yes, following the record-breaking run of last season’s Edmonton-based Broadway style musical comedy Everybody Goes to Mitzi’s, we’re just plain thrilled to announce that the show’s creative team has already reassembled to start planning a follow up show in the same glorious toe-tapping style. Jocelyn Ahlf and Andrew MacDonald-Smith will once again be writing the book, with original music by Ryan Sigurdson and and lyrics by Farren Timoteo, who’ll also direct. The all-sizzlin’, all-singin’ cast for this year’s show is comprised of Ron Pederson, Shannon Blanchet, and Kendra Connor, plus co-writers Jocelyn Ahlf and Andrew MacDonald-Smith, and a live band onstage, led by Ryan Sigurdson.
Season’s Tickets
Although there will be an increase in single ticket prices for the 2009 season, we’re pleased to announce that subscriber prices will remain constant, at $76 for adults, and $64 for seniors/students. Plus- your subscription entitles you to reduced admission at select Teatro special events and at the Varscona’s hilarious monthly late-night variety show Oh Susanna!
